Project overview

The City of Mississauga’s Public Art Program is commissioning an artist to create two site-specific murals at the City Centre Transit Terminal. These murals will:

  • Create a vibrant, welcoming environment for daily commuters
  • Improve way finding throughout the terminal
  • Celebrate the cultural diversity of our community

Project update: We are excited to announce that Jeannette Ladd has been selected to create the murals for the City Centre Transit Terminal. Their design was chosen through a competitive process that included an open call for submissions, evaluation by an arms-length art selection committee, and community feedback.

About the artwork selection

Through an open call to artists, the City’s public art program invited artists to submit expressions of interest. Submissions were evaluated by an independent art selection committee and three applicants were shortlisted and invited to develop proposals.

The City of Mississauga heard from over 900 local residents and visitors who provided their feedback on these three proposals. Jeannette Ladd’s proposal “The Land Remembers” and “The Sky Carries Us” received the highest number of votes. The art selection committee selected this proposal based on the selection criteria and survey feedback.

The story behind the art

“The Land Remembers” and “The Sky Carries Us” are companion murals that create a visual journey through the City Centre Transit Terminal.

The Land Remembers (for the terminal wall)

Honours the living memory of Mississauga’s lands and waters. Trees root deeply in strength, rivers flow with story, and flowers bloom with beauty and medicine. Above the skyline, the four sacred colours (yellow, red, black, and white) stretch across the sky, symbolizing the Four Directions and the teachings that guide Anishinaabe.

The Sky Carries Us (for the information booth)

Lifts the gaze upward to cycles of the sun, moon, and stars. Birds and butterflies appear as messengers of migration and transformation, reminding us that every journey is part of something larger.

Together, the murals ground viewers in memory of the earth while guiding them with the spirit of the sky, offering moments of stillness and connection within a place of constant motion.

About the artist

Jeannette Ladd is an Anishinaabe-kwe from Saugeen First Nation whose art reflects the deep relationships between land, water, sky, and community. Rooted in Anishinaabe teachings, her work blends symbolism and vibrant colour to honour memory, resilience, and connection to place.

She works across painting, digital design, textiles, and public art, creating pieces that transform everyday spaces into places of reflection and belonging. Her murals and installations can be found across Ontario, including at Waterloo International Airport, in the City of Mississauga, and throughout Bruce and Huron Counties.

Through her practice, Jeannette shares stories that connect past and present, reminding viewers that art is both teaching and relationship. Her work invites people to pause, remember, and see themselves as part of the living world around them.
